• History of Haiku. Written by Ryu Yotsuya. Quite excellent. Posted on site of fine Japanese literary magazine, Mushimegane.
• Japanese Haiku Poetry Resources. Superb site for teachers or parents wishing to introduce children/teenagers to haiku.
• Japanese Poetry. Excellent site.
• Haiku section of Wikipedia. Pretty good starting point for Westerners seeking historical perspective.
• An Introduction to Haiku. Nicely condensed material.
• PoemHunter.com has sections devoted to Basho and Buson. These sections show how readily haiku lends itself to web presentation.
• PoetryConnection.net has sections on Basho, Buson, and Issa. Slightly more interactive site than PoemHunter.com.
• Poetry Chaikhana has Basho and Issa sections. Spiritual take on these two poets.
• Pegasos has bio pages for Issa and Shiki. Basic info.
• Plagiarist.com's Basho, Buson, and Issa sections offer a nice sampling of poems.
• Matsuo Basho's "Narrow Road to the Deep North". Lovely Basho site.

• Matsuo Basho: Frog Haiku. 30 different translations/versions of Basho's famous frog haiku. Perfectly illustrates how translating haiku is as much about transformation as translation. Posted on Ken Knabb's quirkily intriguing Bureau of Public Secrets site.
• David G. Lanoue has a truly superb Issa site embedded within his Haiku Guy site.
• So far as keeping the spirit of Masaoka Shiki alive online, Kimiyo Tanaka and the Shiki Haikusphere have done an excellent job, especially Kimiyo Tanaka with her wonderful site Kim's Haiku World and its Shiki Section.

Modern Haiku Sites:

• Mushimegane. The site of Niji Fuyuno and Ryu Yotsuya's literary magazine offers historical perspective, while posting well-crafted modern haiku.
• Kimiyo Tanaka is a modern haiku poet directly influenced by Masaoka Shiki. Her haiku can be found on Kim's Haiku World.
• David G. Lanoue incorporates haiku tecknique into the modern novel. Examples of his vibrant writing can be found on the Haiku Guy site.
• haikuworld. Valuable resource for contemporary haiku.
• Everyday Issa. Sakuo Nakamura's Issa blog strikes that delicate balance between appreciating haiku as a traditional poetic form and harnessing its power to render contemporary life.
• Santoka. This guy is sort of the Charles Bukowski of haiku.
• suchlike.net: news in haiku. Just that: news presented in haiku form. To my mind, a marvelous use of the web.
• Hockey Haiku. I must confess I really enjoyed checking out this site. But you'd think a similar site would exist for baseball, what with the Japanese people's great love affair with that game.
• The Genuine Haiku Generator on everypoet.com. Can haiku be reduced to algorithmic-based software? No.
• Random Word Haiku. Along same line as The Genuine Haiku Generator. Perhaps a tad more technically elegant through tapping Marriam-Webster Online. Created/posted by Steve Kinzler.
