Oblique Diva
My affinity for burlesque comes down to burlesque being a form that
exists in oblique juxtaposition to traditional theater. Bertolt Brecht loved burlesque. He incorporated its
techniques not only for the purpose of social satire, but also to
satirize (and celebrate) the artificiality of theater.
As a performer, Lotte Lenya embodied Brecht's oblique theatrical
vision. She was an oblique diva, as is Legs
Malone, whose image I sampled/processed to create the animation
running above in oblique tribute to Bertolt Brecht, Lotte Lenya, and
Legs Malone.
