Composer/computer programmer Laurie Spiegel has no doubt been a major influence on shaping my approach to digital art. While I owned and used a computer before meeting her, I had no idea how fluid computers could be as tools of expression until she pointed the way. This animation was very much inspired by her music. Laurie and I have often spoken about collaborating on a piece. I would like nothing better than for her to someday compose a score for this brief animation. The animation lasts a tad over 1 minute and 40 seconds, then loops. A high-speed Internet connection is required and I recommend using Firefox as your browser. Even with a high-speed connection, it may take a bit for the piece to fully load and trigger. For me part of the fascination of creating richly textured web animations is that they possess an almost internal life, gradually coming into being. The core image here was sampled from a sketch by my favorite artist, the early Renaissance German painter Matthias Grünewald. I am launching the Digital Hallucinations section of Illumination Gallery with this piece because it cuts to the heart of what I most want achieve as a computer artist: tapping mystically potent old art and infusing its raw energy into a new work.
