Georges Seurat struck a unique balance between science and art. Deeply influenced by scientific theories on color, optical effects, and perception, he developed a painting technique, pointillism, wherein brushstrokes generate dots similar to digital pixilation. I consider Seurat the father of digital art. I created this animation to make my point (pun intended). The animation incorporates 4 Seurat images. There is something “natural” about digitally transforming pointillist painting, natural because the artist’s original intent lay in methodical fragmentation. Learning to appreciate Seurat’s science helped me better understand his art.
Animation duration: 1 minute and 3.9 seconds, before looping.
